Nokia N9 – New Smart-Phone with old OS
Nokia announced its New Nokia N9, a Meego based smart-phone device in Nokia Connection 2011 event in Singapore. The world’s first touch screen smart-phone device without any front-facing button. All you need to use the Nokia N9 is a simple gesture and a swipe of the finger. It is an intuitive way to use all the different features and functions. Whenever you are in an application, just swipe from the edge of the screen to go back home. Available in three colors – black, cyan, and magenta, they should have included some more colors as only cyan looks better.
“With the Nokia N9, we wanted to design a better way to use a phone. To do this we innovated in the design of the hardware and software together. We reinvented the home key with a simple gesture: a swipe from the edge of the screen. The experience sets a new bar for how natural technology can feel,” “And this is just the beginning. The details that make the Nokia N9 unique – the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers – will evolve
in future Nokia products.” this what said by Mr. Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of Design in the press release.
The intresting fact about N9 is, the body of the nokia N9 is made from unibody polycarbonate material and there are no front-facing buttons on device. Nokia calls it a polycarbonate in order to highlight the fact that this isn’t just any plastic material, having the sharp looks to keep users happy as well.
N9 runs on 1GHz processor with 1GB RAM power. It operates on Meego 1.2 Harmattan OS which is bit old but still an interesting interface to operate on. With an 3.9″ AMOLED Display, a Capacitive touch screen of N9 gives you the best veiwing experience. It gives you the impression like applications are really floating on the screen. It also have an Anti-glare polariser.
The New Nokia N9 has the latest Version of Nokia Maps for free, with voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation for walking and driving. Its gonna be NFC-enabled. that means you can connect your Nokia N9 with any NFC-enabled accessories. Do Bluetooth pairing once and after that you can connect to them just by touching. You can share photos orbusiness cards via NFC.
With so many features included in a single device, Nokia N9 will be missing out on some really big ones. Even if N9 features
an 8 megapixel camera, its still missing out a12 megapixel one ason the N8, and along with that N9 only gets an LED-based flash, it doesn’t have a Xenon flash which could have made the difference. Although LED flash of N9 seems better with 20 percent increase in lighting, still nothing beats Xenon. Nokia has also added a non destructive photo editing feature to the N9. This means that users can revert to an original image at any time. New features also allows you to edit the image in preview
mode.It includes some othe features like Auto focus, Video, Geo tagging, LED Video light, Face & Smile detection VGA Secondary Camera for Video call, Dual LEd flash with Screen Display – 4.0 inches, 360×640 pixels.
I will say the phone give has an average battery power with comparing to other smart-phones devices available in the market. Many of the Nokia devices scores low on battery performance and this one falls in same category. They should work more on this issue to increase the bar. 1320 mAh battery gives you Talk time: (GSM/WCDMA) up to 11 h / up to 7 hours, Standby time: Up to 450 hours (WCDMA), up to 380 hours (GSM), Video playback (720P): up to 4.5 hours and Music playback: up to 50 hours.
At this point the device seems great but with so many smart-phone arriving in the market in near by future, i don’t know where this Meego device will stood. It offers you everything you need, but still missing out an extra ordinary factor to make this device special apart from the no buttons and swipe technology used. Overall mobile looks good and the touchscreen works better than the previous touchscreen models launched by Nokia.
